If you’re getting ready to sell your home, you’ve probably been busy cleaning, decluttering, and staging. But if you have pets, there’s one more important thing to add to your list: making a plan for your furry friends during showings—because strangers in their house are stressful for them. AND eliminating pet odors before anyone steps through the front door is important.
As much as we love our pets (and you know I adore mine), not every buyer can tolerate the dander. From allergies and fears to simple preferences, pets can unintentionally turn off prospective buyers. That’s why planning ahead is key.

No matter how sweet or well-trained your dog or cat is, they may get very stressed out by having strangers in their home when you are not there. Plus, buyers may get distracted by their presence. Instead of focusing on your home’s beautiful kitchen or spacious lanai, they’re falling in love with your pet, avoiding your pet, or wondering if they’re about to sneeze.

Some buyers have pet allergies. Others have had scary encounters with animals or just aren’t animal people. You want every potential buyer to feel completely comfortable in your home—and that starts with a pet-free experience during showings.

Here’s a quick checklist to get your home show-ready if you have pets:
1. Find a Place for Your Pets During Showings
Can a neighbor or family member watch them for a few hours? If not, consider doggie daycare or a trusted pet sitter. Even taking your pet for a long walk or drive during a showing can help.
2. Remove All Pet Items (as much is practical 😊)
