Home Seller Tip #10 – Have a Fast Getaway Plan!
When you're selling your home, showings are part of the process—and one of the best ways to get your house sold. But here's the truth: no one wants to live in a museum, and keeping your home in perfect showing condition 24/7 can feel impossible. That’s why having a “fast getaway plan” is one of the smartest things you can do.

Why You Need a Game Plan for Showings
Most showings will be scheduled with plenty of notice, but not always. Sometimes, a potential buyer is in the area and wants to pop in today. Being flexible is a big plus—and having a plan means you can say “yes” with confidence and zero panic.
Buyers often decide whether they’re interested in a home within the first few minutes. That means your home needs to be clean, bright, and clutter-free before they even walk through the door. A fast, effective routine helps your house shine without turning your daily life upside down.
Create a “Ready-to-Show” Checklist
Having a go-to list makes it easier to spring into action. Here’s a simple one to start with:

Turn on all the lights – even in closets and bathrooms

Open curtains and blinds – let in as much natural light as possible

Make the beds – even a quick straighten goes a long way

Clear kitchen and bathroom counters – hide the toothbrushes and dish soap

Take out the trash – especially in the kitchen and bathrooms

Stash pet dishes, toys, and litter boxes – out of sight and out of mind

Do a 5-minute tidy sweep – toss everything into a laundry basket (more on that below!)
Make It Everyone's Mission
Getting ready for a showing doesn’t have to be a solo act. In fact, it’s easier (and more fun) when everyone pitches in.

Assign jobs ahead of time. One person turns on lights, another straightens pillows. You grab the laundry basket.

The Magic of the Laundry Basket Trick
One of my favorite last-minute hacks? Grab a laundry basket. Walk through the house and toss in anything that doesn’t have a home—mail, toys, dog leashes, half-finished art projects, that coffee mug from this morning. Then pop it in the trunk of your car or a closet. Done.
Some sellers get creative and temporarily stash things in dishwashers, ovens, or even under the bed. And you know what? That’s totally fine—as long as buyers aren’t opening them. (Pro tip: maybe not the fridge.)
Don’t Forget the Pets
Have a plan for your furry friends, too! Not everyone loves animals (even the cute ones), and some buyers are allergic or wary. If possible, take pets with you during showings, or arrange for a neighbor to watch them.
Need to make a fast exit? Put the pet bowls and toys outside the back door or stash them in the garage—whatever works.
Keep a "Go Bag" Ready
It helps to have a few essentials packed and ready so you’re not scrambling when it's time to leave:

Water bottles and snacks

A book, tablet, or some toys for the kids

Treats and leash for the dog

A place to go (park, coffee shop, library, etc.)
