Seller Tip #11: Start Packing Early

Seller Tip #11: Start Packing Early –

Your Future Self Will Thank You!

Thinking about selling your home? One of the smartest (and most stress-relieving!) things you can do is start packing early. You don’t need to wait until the moving truck is booked—there’s plenty you can do now to lighten the load and get your house show-ready. In fact, this simple step supports two of our previous seller tips:

👉 Depersonalize your home (Tip #4)
👉 Neutralize your decor (Tip #8)

So, let’s talk about how early packing can work wonders when it comes to selling your home fast and for top dollar.

Why Start Packing Before Your Home Hits the Market?

When buyers tour your home, they’re trying to picture themselves living there. Clutter, personal keepsakes, and overly stylized decor can make that tough. That’s why pre-packing is a win-win—it helps you mentally and physically prepare to move, and it makes your home feel more spacious, clean, and buyer-friendly.

And here’s the best part: you likely already know what you won’t be using over the next few months. Think seasonal clothes, extra linens, holiday decorations, sports gear, books, and rarely-used kitchen items. Pack them up now, and you’ll feel lighter immediately.

What to Pack Early

Here’s a list of items that are perfect for early packing:

  • Off-season clothing and shoes

  • Holiday décor

  • Extra bedding or linens

  • Books and DVDs

  • Family photo albums and collectibles

  • Kids' toys (except their favorites!)

  • Duplicate kitchen items and small appliances

  • Decor that doesn’t appeal to a broad audience

Use this as your guide for a weekend project—or make it a fun family challenge!

How Early Packing Helps You Sell

Starting early isn’t just about avoiding last-minute stress. It actually helps you sell your home:

  • It creates a clean, neutral look that allows buyers to picture their own things in the space

  • It shows your home has ample storage, since closets and cabinets will appear more spacious

  • It builds momentum and reduces overwhelm later when you're officially under contract

  • It’s one more step toward mentally moving on, making the process feel more exciting than daunting

Pro Tips for a Smoother Process

  • Label boxes clearly and group by room for easy unpacking. Label boxes with the name of the room the box should be put in when unloading the truck: kitchen, Primary Bedroom, laundry. Label on two sides, not the top. Boxes are usually stacked on top of one another and that top label won't be easily visible.

  • Use a staging box for items you’ll want to put back out for photos or showings (like one or two key pieces of decor)

  • Store boxes neatly in the garage, attic, or a storage unit—out of sight but ready to go

  • Use this opportunity to donate or toss things you no longer use or need

Ready to Make Your Move?

Starting the packing process early is one of the best ways to set yourself up for success—and make your home more appealing to buyers at the same time.
